Wutschweiger

A classroom production for children aged 8+

Wutschweiger tells the story of Samy and Ebeneser, two children confronted with poverty, loss and sudden social insecurity. As their circumstances increasingly restrict their everyday lives, the play explores shame and exclusion, but also friendship, solidarity and the resilience with which children respond to situations beyond their control.

Designed for a touring classroom production, the stage translates the recurring idea of a world becoming increasingly smaller into a system of grey nesting boxes. Like objects contained within one another, they can be continuously rearranged to create new spaces while gradually revealing smaller scales. Their grey surfaces evoke the housing blocks surrounding the children, while irregular splashes of colour introduce a contrasting sense of energy, playfulness and hope.

The costumes remain deliberately grounded in the children’s everyday world. Contemporary, naturalistic looks reflect the characters’ individual personalities and social circumstances without turning poverty into a visual stereotype, while keeping them recognisable to the young audience.
