Beyond

Sci-Fi short film project

Set across parallel worlds at different stages of technological development, Beyond follows the crew of a spacecraft isolated from Earth and a protagonist encountering an alternate version of himself from a more advanced reality.

The costume concept draws on contemporary astronaut and technical workwear, developing these references into a functional-looking vision of the future. A shared visual system connects the spacecraft crew through numbered garments, integrated body-monitoring technology and colour-coded details indicating team affiliation. In the more advanced parallel world, the same underlying costume language is pushed further towards science fiction, allowing technological progression to become visible through the clothing itself.

The costumes combine altered existing garments with individually designed and constructed elements. Workwear was transformed through additional pockets, reflective materials, technical details and connection points, while props and wearable technology were built from accessible materials such as foam, plastic, hardware components and LED lighting. For exterior missions, a modular life-support unit, technical chest piece and illuminated helmet extend the astronaut silhouette, while custom-built smart glasses introduce a smaller-scale technological element for other members of the crew.

Working within the limited budget of an independent production, the design focused on creating convincing details through adaptation and hands-on making rather than relying on specialist fabrication. Although the film could ultimately not be produced, the completed costumes were documented with the intended cast in a dedicated photoshoot.
